And that&#8217;s the main thing.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, you&#8217;d expect the average <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/savings\/\">savings<\/a> rate would vary a lot, even for people who live in the same city. But interestingly, that&#8217;s not quite the case, as new research has proven. <\/p>\n<p>Financial services company Raisin has revealed that certain parts of the UK (for want of a better word) are better at saving than others. <\/p>\n<p>Spoiler: the region that came out on top might shock you, especially as its cost of living is notoriously high.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/23348001\" data-secret=\"I96GQI7wk2\"><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6 regions with the most savings<\/h2>\n<p>You probably didn&#8217;t expect <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/london\/\">London<\/a> to be number one when it comes to savings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Metro<\/strong> recently reported that the <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/07\/cheapest-tfl-station-live-near-revealed-rents-cost-1-400-23041511\/\">average rent in the capital is around \u00a32,235 per month<\/a>, while last year, it was revealed that it&#8217;s more <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/04\/18\/london-expensive-live-monte-carlo-20671324\/\">expensive to live in London than in Monte Carlo<\/a>. And let&#8217;s not even get into the <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/01\/18\/can-bag-londons-cheapest-pint-one-day-22386963\/\">price of a pint<\/a> these days.<\/p>\n<p>However, the research showed that Londoners have an average savings amount of \u00a328,978.40. The proportion of people with minimal savings are low, too. People living here have an average of \u00a36,438.48. 8.75% of residents here have \u00a30 in their rainy day fund, while 12.50% have \u00a3100 or less and 35% with \u00a31,000 or less.<\/p>\n<p>With just a little more in the bank is <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/northern-ireland\">Northern Ireland<\/a>, coming to an average savings amount of \u00a36,710 &#8211; four times less than Londoners.<\/p>\n<p>The figure for those in the South West jumps by around \u00a3400 to \u00a37,140.18. In <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/scotland\/\">Scotland<\/a>, the average rises to \u00a37,297.19, while in East Anglia, people are managing to save quite a bit more, averaging at \u00a38,032.85.<\/p>\n<p>And at number six &#8211; meaning these residents sit directly in the middle of the savings scale &#8211; is <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/yorkshire\/\">Yorkshire<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/humberside\/\">the Humber<\/a>, with the average amount in the largest county in the UK coming to \u00a38,406.60.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/pharosstory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-521934048-6c51.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-23221745\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Yorkshire residents took the middle spot in terms of their average savings (Picture: Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why might certain regions be better or worse at saving?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Metro<\/strong> spoke to Ayesha Ofori, former executive director and private wealth adviser, and founder of investing app <a href=\"https:\/\/propelle.io\/\">Propelle<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>She explains that&#8217;s not about whether a region is collectively &#8216;better&#8217; at saving, it&#8217;s about how much a person saves or invests depends on how much disposable income they have.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;In London, salaries are higher,&#8217; Ayesha notes. &#8216;And although living expenses are much higher, people are more likely to have something left over to invest.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>On the contrary, in areas with fewer corporate jobs and lower salaries, disposable income is lower.<\/p>\n<p>Ayesha also highlights that how much a person saves is tied to how much exposure they get to saving and investing, commenting: &#8216;It&#8217;s to do with their knowledge level and trust in the systems available to save cash.<\/p>\n<div class=\"factbox\" data-ico=\"factbox_article\" data-track-module=\"factbox_article\">\n<h2 class=\"factbox-title\">\n\t\t\t\tWhat is the 50\/30\/20 rule?\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<div class=\"factbox-content\">\n<p>If saving a little bit more of your paycheck is your goal, but you\u2019re unsure of the best way to start, then <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/05\/13\/struggling-save-money-50-30-20-rule-help-budget-2-23014264\/\">the 50\/30\/20 rule<\/a> is for you.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a tried, tested and proven technique that allows you to start regularly saving each month.
